Answer:
Williamsburg IS great - rent is higher than it would be in Ridgewood, definitely, but it's a very safe, trendy and up-and-coming area. Were you serious about Coney Island?! I lived in the Seagate area of Coney Island as a child and THAT'S safe, yes, but the general area of Coney Island is really run down, dangerous, and kind of gross. During the day it wasn't horrible to walk to the train station, but don't let Keystone Park fool you, lol - it's no amusement park at night. If you're set on that area, look into Seagate - it's a gated community with it's own police force and security. As for Manhattan, Greenwich Village, SoHo, TriBeca - all great for downtown locations. The best, safest and of course ritziest areas are uptown. But, if you're trying to be reasonable and around entertainment and nightlife, I would suggest Greenwich Village - you're going to be paying well over $2000 to live there (with a roommate) so I hope you're working :) My personal preference is Brooklyn - love it here, born and raised, it's better than Manhattan because it's less expensive, less hype, and not full of a bunch of prolonged tourists who are set on moving to Manhattan because they're scared of Brooklyn or Queens. Look into Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Park Slope, even Red Hook - fun, safe, and a little less expensive. Good luck!

Upper east side is a lovely neighborhood with the 92nd St, Y and its activities, good restaurants and stores. There are some older buildings with cheaper apts.
