Moving to NYC as a newly qualified british nurse?
-
Hi all, am trying to gather information on re-locating to NYC. Have always wanted to move there but wanted to get career and stuff sorted in the uk first. I'm due to start uni in birmingham uk in april and am doing a 3 year adult nursing diploma. I'm basically just wondering if anyone has done a similar thing and could give me some advice about it e.g rates of pay, availability of jobs and if apartments will be affordable in the Queens area on a nursing wage. I'm currently 18 but will be 21 by the time i plan to move. Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:
My aunt was an RN in Jamaica and when she came to the USA (New Jersey first then Long Island), she had to take her courses over again. She had to pay out of pocket to take the cousese in New Jersey but was fortunate to have the hospital she's with to refund 100% of what she paid. It was awhile back so I don't know if that hospital does it anymore. I would research (or ask in the medical section of Yahoo! Answer) and see if your degree that you'll be getting from the UK will be accepted here so you are not in for a surprise when you get here. Good luck!! J.S. is 100% correct. You should check to see if your RN certification will be usable here in the U.S. It may not be, and you might have to start from scratch. I have a M.A. in Law here in the U.S. and I can't use it anywhere else but here in the States. My cousin has her M.A. in International Law, so she was able to move abroad and practice..but she still had some roadblocks. So in short, definitely find out if your nursing certification would be transferable. If so, go for it!
