How crazy living in New York City really is?

How is living in New York City? ?

  • I've always been fond of New York City. And I live in Canada. What I've always wondered is what is it like to be living in the Big Apple? NYC? The City That Never Sleeps? Like money-wise. Real-estate-wise. "Getting-An-Apartment"-wise. Traffic-&-Street-Crowding-wise. C'mon, tell me! I love New York!!!

  • Answer:

Born and raised here and I have a love/hate relationship with NYC. The city had changed A LOT since I was as kid in the 80s, basically not as crime ridden. Only long time Manhattan residents have access to cheap-er rent otherwise, if you want to live in Manhattan you will have to cough up over a $1,000 plus for rent depending the neighborhood. It's less if you have room mates but you're still going to be paying roughly $800, plus other expenses. The other boroughs, Queens, Brooklyn, & Bronx are up and coming and still have pockets of cheap rents available. You'll have to travel a bit more but you're still in NYC. Some people save by living in Staten Island but the commute seems like a bit too much. Living in Jersey might save you money but you'll have to either pay double fare for both Jersey & NYC transit or if drive the now $12 toll charge to cross the Hudson. Almost everyone uses the MTA NYC subway and there has been a huge recent increase in bike riders. The city has a lot of new bike lanes. They're great if you don't have some a#*!hole double parked. Most people walk a lot, if you didn't previously walk, get ready! New Yorkers walk really fast, and frequently zig zag around idling tourists. New Yorkers are very friendly if you spark conversation which I feel is easier to do than other parts of the country. New Yorkers may come across as aggressive and overly ambitious but they're some of the most approachable people in the world. Don't believe all the generalizations. Good luck.

Well, Chazzy (above) might not be the most credible person to answer this question as she clearly lives in Wisconsin! So ignore the remarks about traffic. We DO have terrible traffic, but that's inconsequential, since most people who live here take the subway everywhere. The truth is, many people love it here, but it's not for everyone. I love living here. I came here to go to college and, from that first day, I felt like a New Yorker. I've lived here over 30 years now. However, I've known many people who enjoy going out and enjoying the nightlife here, but really don't like the city itself. They end up leaving after a few years. Some people come here expecting to like it, but never fit in here. And some people who were born here long to live elsewhere. That's okay. There are plenty of us who love it and who really enjoy what the city has to offer. It's just not for everyone.

As a New York City native (born, raised, and still living here), I can tell you that it is a great city. Where else in the world will you find billionaires, celebrities, middle clasa citizens, and homeless people walk side by side on the same sidewalk? The answer is probably nowhere, and it makes it exciting. NYC is not for everyone. I know a lot of people that move here and end up complaining after a short period of time. We live life in the fast lane here and its hard for some people to adjust to the lifestyle change. For instance, many people call New Yorkers rude. We are not rude, we just usually in a rush and too busy to stop and be kind to every person that passes by us. Plus, when you live in a city with con-artists and psychos, you will act rude and use it as a shield to protect yourself from people like that. And yes, we are blunt. We dont beat around the bush, we tell it to your face and dont care. I have a co-worker from Tennessee that comes to work crying everyday because she doesnt understand us. The money is pretty good here, but its getting harder and harder to find a good job because so many people have moved here. There are so many different businesses that you will find a job and work your way up to wherever you want to be. The good thing about New York city is that if you cant afford an apartment in Manhattan, you can find one in the other four boroughs for a more affordable price. Staten Island is beautiful, it has parks and beaches, and its only a ferry or bus ride from Manhattan. A 2 bedroom apartment that would cost you $2800 in Manhattan would only cost you $1200 in Staten Island or Brooklyn. The best thing about it here is the transit system. You can go anywhere with local/express buses, subway, and ferries. The traffic has gotten worse because of the amount of people that live here. In the 80s and early 90s it was quieter and the traffic was less. There is almost always traffic during rush hour times (6-10 and 3-7). Street crowding is a problem expecially because of the tourists. I have to push my way though crowds sometimes. The sreet crowding is usually bad in Mid-town and Downtown, and the areas with less crowds are Chelsea and West Village (which are also great areas to live). The nightlife is amazing here. If you like to party than you should make yourself familiar with the Meat-Packing district. There are so many different restaurants and because of the diversity here, you will fall in love with ethic foods. A piece of advice is to stay away from hot dog street vendors, they are gross. If your going on a date you should go to Babbo (excellent place). Woodbury Commons which is an hour away from the city has outlet stores and you will get designer clothes and shoes for less. The best pizza places are Rays famous pizza in Greenwich Village, L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn, and Brothers in Staten Island. If you like halal food, you will really enjoy the halal cart on 53rd and 6th. Brighton Beach in Brooklyn has amazing Russian food, Astoria has amazing Albanian food, and Little Italy obviously has delicious food. Take care :)

I have been making the holiday trips home to my small southern town for about ten years now and every time, I can't wait to go, then I'm there for four days and I can't wait to get back to NY. It's more competitive than other places, for jobs, definitely tough for housing, but then you feel cool because you thrive here. It's expensive, you have no space, yard, car, or quiet. But then you have no rednecks, driving traffic (city folk don't drive), or WalMarts. There is a great variety of restaurant food types, a good variety of people, and if you're into the arts it's got plenty to offer. It's also got a lot if you like sports.

Its awesome, you have to have money, and the cost of the apartment depends on the type of neighborhood your in,the traffic is awful and packed but its still a wonderful place to live!
