Could Americans please answer this question, especially if you're living in New York City?
-
I'm thinking about living in New York City, all the way, going to university, etc, so I can start my Directing Career, I'm from England, and I can get into New York City with my Irish Passport, since both America and Ireland say I can go live in America legally, since Ireland has a huge amount of Irish History in it, (don't prove me wrong, I have relatives living in Chicago, NYC and Philadelphia because of they're Irish Passports), so what I would like to is, would you care if I started my life in NYC or America, because I hear many complaints about Americans and Immigrants, Thanks. Also is it true that you like heavy English Accents because I have a heavy one.

Answer:
Contrary to what you may have heard, you'll need a visa. If you don't have American citizenship or residency status there's no way you'll be able to live here for longer than 6 months no matter what kind of relationship the US has with the Irish. The only thing Irish citizenship will grant you is the possibility of obtaining a visa quickly and without hassle (compared to other countries). You're best bet is to enroll in school as a student visa is easier to obtain. You'll probably be coming with euros right? So NYC shouldn't be too bad, but there are other places that are A LOT cheaper. You don't want to waste all of your money living in an expensive city. If you're trying to get into film definitely do a search on film schools outside of NYC, you'll save yourself some money. As for your accent, just curious why do you have an English accent instead of an Irish one (if you're Irish?). You'll do fine though. Nothing Americans love more than an [European] accent, English or Irish it doesn't matter. I'm sure you'll get lots of questions as people will be intrigued :) It's immigrants from outside Europe (and Australia) that have a harder go of it.

No matter what you may have heard, an Irish passport does not allow you to live in the US. Any chance those relatives are Americans who also have Irish passports? That's fairly common, since Ireland will issue a passport to anyone with an Irish grandparent. They can live in the US because they're American citizens. If you want to go to school in NYC, figure out what school you want to go to, and see if they will admit you and help you get a student visa. Your accent is no problem, Americans think English accents are cute.

America and NYC will welcome you with open arms and they'll love your accent. The only immigrants that Americans have trouble wanting in the country are the Latin Americans who come to abuse our welfare, health and food stamps system and get free handouts for everything. We are also not too happy about people moving here from terrorist nations in the Middle East who hate us yet use our system and want to kill us from the inside while they reap all the benefits of Living in a FREE country. As long as you aren't a religious terrorist and can support your self and not leach off the system you will be welcome here.
