Student - from California to New York?

• So I'm sponsored student, I live in California but I want to move to New York for University. I get $2,300 monthly from my scholarship and I have to pay for everthing including rent, utilities and transportation. I'm planning to move to New York by August, me and 2 of my friends, we all get paid the same, $2,300 monthly. So for New Yorkers I need some help, do you think we can afford living in New York with this amount? I have a car in California that I can ship to New York just incase. right now we pay $1,500 for 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room and kitchen. how much would it cost for such an apartment in New York? what should I think of before I plan for sure? any advices I could use? Thanks in advance.

  I think you'll find a VERY small apartment for that amount, even in the nicer neighborhoods in the outer boroughs. I think you ought to count on paying at least $1,000 more for enough space for three of you to live comfortably. As for the car, leave it behind! If you move to a good neighborhood, it should have good public transportation. Most single people without children who work/go to school in Manhattan (as opposed to in one of the other boroughs) do NOT own cars. I live in Brooklyn, in a really nice neighborhood (Park Slope.) I work farther out in Brooklyn and have two kids. I DO own a car, but it's a royal pain! When I went to NYU (more years ago than I'd like to admit) I did NOT own a car, and no one in my circle did either. And it was easier to park in Park Slope back then! Bottom line, as an NYU student, you shouldn't need a car in most neighborhoods in NYC.
