How do I get from Washington, DC to Staten Island, NY without flying?

I'm trying to visit one of my friends who moved out there. I'm willing to take a train or a bus but I don't know how to get to Staten Island really. I know it's in New York City and not that far from Manhattan.... So how do I get there from here?

If I were you I'd take one of the DCtoNYC bus companies. BoltBus is my favorite; they're cheap ($20 each way) and have free wifi a bathroom on the bus. They usually pick up at Metro Center in DC and drop off at Penn Station in NY. There's a ferry that will connect you to Staten Island from Manhattan, and there's also rail and bus lines that will connect you (maybe with some transfers involved). Check the MTA NYC site for specific schedules and lines. www.mta.info

Figure out your cheapest option for travel from DC to Manhattan, and where it arrives... -- Amtrak train -- Penn Station, 32nd street at 7th Avenue -- Greyhound bus -- Port Authority, 40th Street at 8th Avenue -- Chinatown bus -- various different addresses Then go to www.hopstop.com for specific public transit directions from where you're getting dropped off to where you need to be in Staten Island. Your best option may be an express bus, or a subway to the ferry to a bus, or a subway to the ferry to the Staten Island rail system...it depends. It may also make sense to ask your friend for tips, as s/he probably visits Manhattan regularly, right?
