What are some things to do while in University City?

Is this a good reason for moving to New York City?

  • So far, I have lived in a small city, a large spread out city, and a large condensed city (Bangkok). Out of those three, I enjoyed living in the large condensed city the most. I am in college right now in a place really don't like, and I am transferring next year. I am thinking about going to either a university in New York City or a university in a small city in Colorado. What ever locations I decided on will play a large role on where I decide to spend my life after I college, so I would like to try and make a good decision. I was wondering if this was a good reason for going to New York City, or if I should reconsider? What I like about big cities is the feeling that something is always going on around me, even if I am not part of it. I have been an expat kid for most of my life so I enjoy having a mix of different cultures around me. I like public transportation. I would rather not drive. Where ever I go I would like to be in a place that had museums, theaters, and other cultural things. Things I am worried about living in New York: I love animals. Would it be hard to own cats, or even a dog if I were to live in New York? How fashionable is everyone? I have read things that say most people like to dress up, and others that say it is just like everyone else. I know that the cost of living is really high, but you be able to survive on a slightly lower salary for the first few years of your job?

  • Answer:

New York is New York. You don't need any reason to want to be there besides the fact that it is NEW YORK CITY. I think it takes a certain type of person to live here and you seem like you would enjoy the environment. As for your concerns, 1) There are many landowners that allow pets, you just have to look for them. 2) There are people who are dressed to the nines everyday and those who are low-key. But I think for the most part they are dress casually, but in well thought out outfits. Then again, it is NYC, so whatever your style is, it will be embraced. 3) You can live off a lower salary, you just have to make smart decisions when buying. Be frugal. You also might consider looking in the other boroughs or even Jersey to live. Don't limit yourself to just Manhattan, unless you really want this specific borough.

Some NYC landlords restrict species of or numbers of pets, others are more open. I have nine cats, but large snakes are not allowed (a rule resulting from a bad experience we had years ago). Few are opposed to cats, while dogs are more problematic in some locations (and who wants to walk them in some of NYC's weather?) Fashion? Depends on the industry you work in. IBM doesn't allow beards and men must wear a tie. Depends on the employer. NYC's cost of living is not as bad if you live in one of the outer boroughs, and cultural things are at least as common in parts of Brooklyn or Queens as anywhere in Manhattan. In fact, the Census Bureau says Queens has more ethnic groups that any other county in the USA, with an accompanying diversity of food stores, restaurants, night spots, etc.

I would recommend you rely on your own sense of jugdement. You do what you think is best. Animals aren't hard to own, you just gotta train them to stay in the house. Unless your trying to impress a date or something, you shouldn't care about what people might think. i mean, come now, its a condensed city with large crowds, people are too busy to notice, remember, or care (unless you wear something completely dump like pink tights) As for the cost of living, thats up to you to research and decide, its different for every builing in any city. And i'll admit, it might hard to find a nice spot in a famous city. Good luck.
