How much money should I take for spending money for a weekend in New York City?

I'm going to visit my friend who lives in allentown, PA for the weekend this coming weekend and we will be going to New York city for one or two nights I believe to stay and shop and whatever else..I'm not sure if we'll be going to a show or not. I was wondering how much spending money I should take (I won't be buying fake designer purses or other things like that). If you have been could you tell me how much I should take, for food, clothes, street vendors..? Also, should I carry cash? or a debit card(which I have)? And should I carry a purse or just keep my money in my pants or under my shirt? (any tips from experience?) Thanks a ton! If you have any other ideas for money or what to pack I would love to know! Thanks!!
