What is a good college to go to for that?

What are good places to go in New York City (for a college visit)?

  • Ok, three of the colleges I'm applying to are in New York City, so I'm planning a trip to visit them. I'm wondering what I should do when I'm not touring a college. Like, what are some places that I should know about if I go to college in nyc? I'd like to check stuff like that out before I'm living there. The colleges I'm checking out are CUNY Hunter College, Fordham at Lincoln Center, and Marymount Manhattan, so i guess stuff to do around there would be good. This trip will be in early November if that makes a difference. I've already established that I'm going to the Met, and seeing a show. I dont know what show yet so if someone has a suggestion for a CHEAP but good show, that would be great. I dont care if its off off off off off broadway, I just want to see something. Any suggestions for activities or shows are greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

Hunter is in the east 60's, Marymount in the east 70's - stop in the Whitney Museum, stroll up Madison Ave. window shopping the very high-end stores and galleries, check out the Central Park Zoo Fordham is the west 60's - see what else is showing at Lincoln Center (symphony, ballet, drama, film) and wander north through the upper west side or south into Hells Kitchen since one of them might end up being your neighborhood - lots of restaurants and shops While you're visiting the schools be sure to find out where students live then check out those areas to see how you feel about them. Ride the subway so you can see how easy it is and where it can take you (check out Greenwich Village, the East Village, Lower East Side, Union Square - lots of students live or hang out in those areas). Get a copy of Time Out magazine for listings of what's going on while you're here. As for shows to see, I know Roundabout has a new play (a comedy I think - "Speech & Debate") in a very small theater with $20 tickets. If you want something that's more mainstream go to the TKTS booth on 48th St. just west of Broadway (Times Sq. area) on the day you want to see a show and get half price tickets. The Off-Broadway shows (maybe Altar Boyz?) are cheaper than the Broadway shows. Not all shows are available - the most popular ones are never there. Early November is a great time to be in NYC but the weather is unpredictable - could be chilly or warm so check the forecast just before you come. And NY is a walking town so bring your comfortable shoes!
