How much money do you need to make to live in Manhattan comfortably?

  • My husband and I were thinking of moving to Manhattan because of a good job offer and I hear that Manhattan is a very expensive place to live in. Right now, my husband and I both earn around $150k a year each which is about $300k altogether, would those two combined salaries make a comfortable lifestyle in Manhattan?

The rule of thumb is to have your rent 1/60th to 1/40th of your annual income and put away for a rainy day so it is there when you need it. It depends on what you mean by comfortably. It also depends on your family size. My husband and I are in your income bracket, but we have two kids. We also like space, which can be an expensive commodity in NYC. We live in Brownstone Brooklyn now (Park Slope, to be specific) which suits our income, family size, and taste better than Manhattan right now. When the kids grow up and move away, who knows? But for now, Brooklyn is a better bet for us.
