  • i want to move my family to new york. because my sister is about to graduate in May, and go to college, she may be out the house. that would leave me(12th highschool) my mom, and little brother(6th middleschool). i went to ny last november, and i loved it there. my mom lived there in the 80s or whatever. OK..... I want to know where is the best place to live in New York, thats affordable. for 3 maybe, maybe 4 bedroom apartment....or house or something what would be best? and affordable? and in the city, or near it? i really appreaciate this help!!!

  • Answer:

The truth is, a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment is NOT affordable, almost anywhere in the City (and you can just about forget getting a house, if you are looking for affordable.) Also, it is really hard to move to NYC in the 12th grade, as it's hard to enter a NYC high school in 12th grade. The system isn't well set up for people entering later than 10th grade. This is assuming you plan to attend public school. NYC is a great place to live, but if you are planning to "move your family" you are probably engaging in pure fantasy. What, pray tell, would your parents do for work? Do they really want to come here? My best suggestion to you is try to go to college here. I did. I came here in 1977 to attend NYU and just stayed. I loved it here as soon as I got here. I stayed and became a New Yorker. I have now been here for over 30 years and I'm raising my family here. I love it here. But I came here with a purpose and made a life here. You can do this, too. But you have to be realistic about it.

Brooklyn and Queens are more residential than "the city" (Manhattan south of 59th street). Nothing in the NYC area is really "affordable", though. When people in most other cities hear the housing prices here they go into shock.

Yonkers, it's a big city right outside NYC. So, I guess since you're in HS and your little brother are in middle school, there are a lot of catholic and public schools around here with transportation. You can even take the train to other cities like the Bronx, White Plains, NYC, Queens, Brooklyn, and a lot of other places.
