I'm travelling to NY tomorrow by car from MD, I was told to park in NJ Metro and use that to go around NY?

My final destination is the JFK airport but I would like to pass by Manhattan before that. Is it practical to park in NJ and use the Metro to get around? Thanks!!

Answer:
First, I'm pretty sure they said to park in NJ at METROPARK. If that is the case then it is not a particularly convenient place to park for over night. First there are a lot of monthly pass users and it is a popular train station so the other spaces are a premium and fill really early. It might be convenient if you were going there to the city and back but you still have JFK to and that will take some time. So, I don't think that's a good answer for you,. OR if you really want to see the City then why not drive directly to JFK and work backwards. Park your car in long term parking and take bus/train into the city. You could easily find out what the time schedules are and plan from there. The other alternative would be to drive into the city and park. That would cost you an arm. leg, and another person and you'd still be using cabs or subway. Now you're back to the same predicament. How much time do you have and is it worth it?

Much better idea . Take exit 10 on the New Jersey Turnpike RT 440/ Perth Amboy/ Outerbridge Crossing . Go over the bridge -pay the toll $6.00 Take 440 north to I-278 East -two lane exit Follow signs for Verazanno Narrows Bridge Get of at the last exit Bay Street - Basically never use the left lanes on I-278 Make the left on Bay and follow it to the end at St George Park you car - make sure you have a roll of quarters with for the meter. Take the free Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan The #1 train is right there as soon as you get off the boat and the 1 will take you up the west side or if you want to go up the east side walk a couple of blocks north and catch the #4 train at Bowling Green-good choice for Chinatown get off on Canal To JFK Back to the VZ Bridge , use the upper deck -great view keep left I If you don't see any trucks ,you're going the right way Follow the Belt Parkway thru Brooklyn to JFK If you need a good slice of NY pizza-Stop by New Park Pizza on Cross Bay Blvd in Howard Beach You will find it on the left 2 lights south of the Parkway .It's been there for 50 years 1-718-641-3082 to order a pie If you call them when you pass the Knapp St exit it should be ready when you get there To JFK -back to the Parkway -use the service road, the airport is the next exit east

You don't need a car in NYC. In fact, a car is a major burden in NYC. Parking is hard to find and expensive. You can get everywhere, including the airport, by subway.

That sounds like the best way for what you are going to be doing.

If you are talking about Metropark in Edison, good luck trying to find a parking space without a monthly pass. Also, if you are going to JFK to take a trip. I don't think you can leave your car there overnight, it's a commuter train station. If you don't want to drive to JFK, drive to Newark Airport, leave your car there and take the Port Authority Shuttle Bus to JFK if you have luggage, or you can take the Airtrain at Newark, transfer to New Jersey Transit to Penn Station. Take the Subway or LIRR from Penn Station to Jamaica Station and take the Airtrain to JFK.

No, that is ridiculous. If your final destination is JFK drive to JFK. If you are driving your own car park in long term parking (I would assume that you would do this anyway if you are taking a trip) and leave your luggage in the car until you get back. If you are returning a rental car check your luggage. You can get to anywhere in Manhattan from JFK in the same amount of time.

I guess it really depends how much time you plan to spend in Manhattan. If it is at least one full day or more, then definately don't take your car. Parking is very expensive. Take the path into the city and use the subways and cabs. Try not to be driving at all during morning and evening commutes. If you just want to spend half a day or a few hours in Manhattan, then take your car there and drive on to JFK. I guess I would suggest some things though. If you arrive in New York and it is not busy, park in either Brooklyn or Queens and then take the train in to the city. This will situate you closer to JFK and then it won't be so hard to get there. If you arrive in NYC during morning or evening rush hour times, then go ahead and park in New Jersey and come back for your car to go to JFK when it is not so rushed if possible. If you leave your car in New Jersey be sure and add extra time to your commute to JFK if your flight leaves during the rush hours.
