i've been to nyc 3 times, so i'm use to the crazy traffic and being around tons of people. i'm going to nyc for new years eve, which i have never done before. i was wandering if the little stores/restaurants close early/are closed that day through out time square, since people will be standing around outside for the evening events? i'm only going to be there for one full day, so i would really love to at least shop around for just a little bit.

Answer:
Everything should be open for most of 31 December. As you point out, businesses that are directly on Times Square may close early, since the area is cordoned off for the crowds in the early evening, and there is effectively no ability to walk around by mid-evening.
