Where is the most romantic place to go out in New York?

Where is the best / darkest place to gather to go stargazing in New York?

  • Hey everyone, I've been a huge fan of amateur astronomy and stargazing for a long time. Unfortunately, I live near Boston where you're lucky to be able to make out some of the major constellations. The most amazing adventure I've had was when I was 12 going to upstate Maine late-June and seeing the true night sky on a clear night, with no moon interference for the first time. I was absolutely floored by how filled the sky was and my young brain didn't feel like it could process the beauty that I saw up there. My girlfriend and I have been planning a trip to New York, and I've wanted to plan a trip out in the mountains where I can take my girlfriend so she can see the beauty of a truly dark night sky. Anyone have any suggestions on their favorite spots for an awesome viewing experience? I realize you have to go far to get a nice dark spot, and the darker, the better! Thanks a ton. - Sorry for double-posting.

Away from Times Square where the lights are. Fort Tyron Park is the highest hatural point in Manhattan so you could look in stargazing there. http://nysgo.com/guide/2008/05/04/romantic-places-in-new-york/ Here is a shot of the George Washington Bridge from there http://kennyrodriguezphotography.com/2008/01/26/george-washington-bridge/ Steve http://NewYorkForum.us

As you might imagine, no place inside the city is really dark. The best may be Great Kills Park on Staten Island, but even there fourth magnitude is a stretch on the best of nights. Probably the closest that is good would be outside Woodstock. I once visited there on a property about six miles outside of town, and on a clear moonless night had no trouble seeing 15 Pleiades naked eye. I also had the luck to see a re-entering piece of a launch rocket make a spectacular death plunge.

Outside of New Paltz is pretty good for the Northeast but it's well over an hour from NYC. If you live in Boston the Northeast kingdom of Vermont, St Johnsbury/Newport is good. No where in the Northeast where save Central Maine, Central Quebec and the Newfoundland is very good for unaided or even aided detail in the nightime sky. Too much light along the NE corridor. If your really want to see the stars Plan a trip to central Wyoming the Dakota's, British Columbia or Northern Idaho. I've you never really seen the nightime sky hundreds of miles (not one or two hundred) from a big city you'll be blown away.
