How do you ice skate as a beginner?

Question for people who have been to Citipond ice rink at Bryant Park (NYC)?

  • I'm a beginner ice skater. I don't skate that well yet so that's why I want to get some practice. I'm thinking of going to Bryant Park for this. I'm planning to go early in the morning this Friday. Do you think it'll be crowded? I don't really skate well when there's a lot of people and the ice gets rough. And how much are snacks? Btw can anyone give some ice skating tips for a beginner like me?

It's the Friday before Christmas, in the peak of tourist season, in the center of touristy NY, so you will see crowds and will have to wait. Sometimes people have to wait an hour or two to get on the ice. However, you can buy a speed pass (forget the exact name), but you can designate what time you want to skate and you don't have to wait in line. You just show up at your designate time. The cost is $20 I believe and it does include the cost of skare rental. So if you were going to rent skates anyway, you are better off spending the few extra bucks. Go check it out at citipondatbryantpark.com. Also, you should bring a lock to store your stuff in one of their complimentary lockers. They have a bag check, but I think it's pretty pricey (like $10). As far as the quality of the skaters, there is a wide range of skill levels. However, most people are beginners to intermediate skaters. I believe you can also sign up for skating lessons (not sure if that is just for kids). As far as snacks go, I have never bought anything inside the rink, so I can't say. However, the shops are all around the rink so you can definitely find something before you go in or when you get back.

Citipond is a fantastic place to learn! It's pretty much where I have and many of my friends. It's easy to learn there if you have your own skates. If you have your own skates, it's free! So you can get a lot of practice in! Going in the early mornings and during business hours is the best time to go. It's not too busy. You can get some nice speed and space. No need to watch out for people falling, slamming into you, or those annoying kids who are trying to race and cut people off. Luckily the ice guards kick them off. The middle of the rink is usually empty so it is a nice little space to practice. If you can balance and slightly skate, go there. Avoid holding onto the walls! You won't learn by having a wall hold you up! Just like handstands. ( Random, but true!) So yea, Friday morning should be great. It will probably be a little more crowded this Friday than normal because students are off from school. But who wants to get up early when they have off? haha So now some tips! There are a lot on youtube. I bet you already have the skill, you just need practice. Try not to step like you are walking. You will get no where but falling onto the ice. When you're skating, lean a little bit forward. The power which moves you comes from the strides you make. Lets say you are pushing off with your right leg. The right leg is providing the power for you to move forward. Your left leg will be the one that guides you so keep it straight! And vice versa. It is easier said than done but you can do it! This video is reallllly basic but it might help. I don't know what stage you are at. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyAYIXN6tUY Well, I hope all this helps! Have a great time ice skating. It's so much fun. I can't wait to get back there next week!

I've only been there once in the 6 years I've been in NY. You can rent your skates for around 12 dollars and it's very accepting of beginners. I don't recall there ever been snacks actually inside the rink. That would be kind of dangerous.

Skaters are going to want to see the tree so expect a little crowd. A tip is to dress for the weather and don't fall while on the ice. Carry your own snack and check leave it in your check bag for $7. http://411newyork.org/guide/2007/05/18/tree-lighting-ceremonies-in-new-york/
