Answer:
Don't just show up in New York with no plan-- That's a surefire way to disaster. From your post you sound like you don't have a plan at all. You need to: - Have a Plan A. You should get in touch with any friends or family in New York for support-- Have them show you how to survive here for a month or two until you can do it on your own. Make sure you got a job lined up. Research where you want to live. Research the living costs so you can be sure you can make ends meet. - Have a Plan B. Don't burn bridges with your folks back in California. If you find that New York isn't for you, you can contact your folks for help so you can bail. New York can be a great place to live-- Only if you know what you are doing. Hope this helps.

If money isn't a problem but not knowing anyone is the big deal, there are some solutions. Check out Craigslist and look for roommate/share ads there. The great thing about NYC is that there are tons of people who have moved there from all over who knew no one...so odds are pretty good you'll meet someone like yourself who has an apartment to share. Manhattan is VERY expensive. Manhattan is the area most people think of being NYC, but in fact there are 5 separate sections of the city...they're called boroughs. Besides Manhattan there is Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. Much of Brooklyn has become quite expensive also and most of it isn't convenient time-wise to Manhattan. Avoid the Bronx as much of it is pretty rough/depressed. Staten Island is quite far from Mid Town and very suburban. Which leaves Queens There are some great neighborhoods in Queens that are very convenient to Manhattan (15-20 min. on subway) and affordable by NYC standards. Look for listings/ads in Flushing, Kew Gardens, Astoria and Jackson Heights...in that order. Also very convenient to NYC yet not in the middle of all the craziness is Hoboken...just across the Hudson River from NYC in New Jersey. It's like a village yet 10 minutes to Manhattan via the PATH subway trains. Clean, relatively safe, lots of young professionals, very walkable and convenient to anything you'd need...very manageable first place to live in a overwhelming city in which move to. Again check out Craigslist for ads there. Probably all in all your best bet. The hoboken.com website has a ton of roommate ads as well. Good Luck!

So, you are planning to move to New York City. Great! Here is what you need to do. First, ask yourself, "Do I really need to move to NYC?" If you answered no or is unsure then visit NYC until you are sure. Second, ask yourself, "Where am I going to live?" If you don't know where, you better start hunting for an apartment. Third, ask yourself, "What happens when I need help?" If you don't know then, you will have to start looking for friends in NYC. A great start is to visit http://newyorkforum.us Fourth, ask yourself, "How am I getting there?" You have to save up to pay for your moving expense and storage. Fifth, ask yourself, "Will I be able to get a job?" No money from a job and soon your savings will be finished and you will be out on the streets and in the cold. This is where friends will come in handy then to help find jobs and for a quick loan should you become short. Sixth, ask yourself, "Can I go back to where I moved from?" Most people move back when things get rough here so don't burn your bridges and keep in touch with old friends. Seventh, ask yourself again question one again. If you do not have any problems saying "Yes" then welcome to New York City

What kind of advise you need? Stop being scared and come. New York city is one of the best cities and in my opinion it is a city that everyone should live at least once in their lives! I have been living here for almost 10 years and love it! Come you will have fun... you may not like in the beginning but you will learn to love it... people here are fast and quick, and they don't seem nice at first but they are friendly in their own way... you will see. Make sure you get a place to stay before coming. The best way is to find a roommate for short term, the best and most affordable way to live here, unless you got enough money to spend get your own place. Go to this website to find share and to find people looking for roommates: www.craigslist.com I hope you have a great time!
