How much is an apartment in New York City?

About how much would an apartment in New York City be?

  • Or around NYC also works. My friend and I wish to go to college in New York and share an apartment, so I was just wondering how much it would be. It will be in 4 years, so it's a ways in the future as well. I just want to be prepared. =] Thanks!

  • Answer:

The price greatly depends on which borough you live in. I live alone in a Manhattan studio apartment which cost over well over $500,000 when I bought it a few years ago. You should consider renting.

Moving to NY sound fabulous, but realize that it is VERY, VERY expensive. As students, you will already have a low income, so unless your parents are going to foot the bill, you need to do some SERIOUS saving. Also, you will most likely have to live on the outskirts of NY to find affordable housing. But, it may not be that safe....Maybe you should see if you two can get a dorm together on campus.

A 2 bedroom in Manhattan would be between $3,000 and $3,500 a month.

Renting in Manhattan is EXPENSIVE!! Consider finding an apartment in Brooklyn or Jersey City. The commute from either cities is good. I've lived in both all my life and love both cities. When I was in college I was renting a 3 bedroom apartment in Jersey City & I had 2 roommates. We were each paying $900. Now I live in Brooklyn (Park Slope) with my husband and rent is $1575 for a 1 bedroom. We're getting a 2 bedroom soon, the rent will probably go up $300 - $500. You can probably find something really small at an affordable price in the boroughs but you won't find anything good at a low price in Manhattan.

The average apt in Manhattan now sells for about one million dollars. A tiny studio apt in a less than wonderful part of Manhattan rents for at least $2000/month. Consider one of the outer boroughs. A one bedroom in Queens can be had for less than $1500/month.

2 bedroom apartments in a safe part of town run from 3000-3500$ a month.
