How much money do I need to live in New York City?

  • Okay, I'm 12 going on 13 and I have a lot of questions in addition. I'm hoping to go to NYU, I'm an all A student (scholarships hopefully) and I live in New Mexico, a long trip, I know. I'm switching in career paths,l like medical, law (becoming a lawyer), and/or maybe something in fashion. What do you guys think will be able to support me in New York, I understand it's expensive, that's why I'm planning now. Can you guys give me some info. on rent, essentials, NYU tuition, and whatever you can about financial facts and living in New York City. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

  • Answer:

Im Older Than you (13) And i still not ready to live on my own. Relax And Enjoy Your parents while you have them, Things would only get worst when you grow up. EDIT: Apartment's dont cost 3,000 Like the last poster said. They only round up to 1,200 for the rent, light, cable and so on. Like i said, things only get worst when you grow up :)

Oh my goodness you are more focused at 12 than my daughter is at 43. I hope you never lose your enthusiasm and you must come from an great family of achievers to have set such great goals at such a young age. Whatever road life finds you on I'm sure you will be a success. Good luck! It's not about money. You shouldn't try to buy your way here if this isn't where you're originally from (there are a few exceptions to the rule, though, such is if you already have family residing here or in the NY Metropolitan Area). New Yorkers should be the only ones living here. Think about that long and hard and let that sink in deeply into your head. Nothing against you personally, I'm sure you're a bright young lady and all, but this is not the time for newcomers to settle (nor will it be for a very, very long time).

if you're still 12, why don't you concentrate on high school first? besides, NYU isn't the be all and end all of colleges. it's a good place, but if you're trying to rank them, and you eventually have high enough scores, you may get into Columbia. your personal situation and likes and dislikes can change on a dime. there are also wonderful small colleges throughout the Northeast that have many students from NYC and are close enough to travel to once in a while. (i speak from personal experience) and then you can move to NYC after college. if you keep your options open, you'll allow more opportunities to come to you.
