How do NYPD cops make it living in New york city?

  • NYPD cops start out makin like 32000.. after taxes thats less than 24000 a year.... how do they live in such an expensive city? i want to join NYPD but I want to know how thats even possible with such a low salary?

    Like a lot of the other answerers said, they live at home and have the barest minimum in expenses. I read an article a few years ago about one cop who was living in the family's basement and surviving on only bread and cold cuts because that was all he could afford. On top of that, you have to deal with potentially being hurt or killed everyday because many people hate the police and what they stand for. It sounds like such a miserable life to me. And of course, the NYPD does not recruit the best or "finest" with that salary. The best cops work where the pay is more and the stress is less. No wonder, there are so many negative incidents here with police killing and brutalizing civilians.

Most cops live with family during their first couple years, because you're right, it would be almost impossible to support yourself living alone on the academy salary. Also, cops are allowed to live outside the city, so some find cheaper apartments in rockland county and such. Remember, the salary scale is set up so that your pay rises significantly when you finish the academy, and then you get several more steps up over the first few years.

NYPD might offer some beneffits to its workers, plus lots of them do not live in NYC but in Long Island...sorry long ilsand is NYC, sometimes I forget that, but LI is far from where the cops actually work and the rent there is way cheaper than in Manhattan.

Lately, they've been making a living by moving to Seattle. They've been doing a talent raid of our police force. It's a big problem here right now and there's no money in the budget to fix it in the current economy.
