Move to New York or Roosevelt Island?

• Hello, I wanted to ask long term New York resident people a few questions. If a person wanted to move to new york, where would the safest areas be and the cheapest. Would anybody think it would be good idea to get a roommate or rent a room. Also, Is Roosevelt Island a good place to live in? One last question is how much money would someone need to save to move to New York without a car and with only clothes, a cat, bathing an cleaning products, small box of kitchen dishes, shoes and no furinture? One more thing, how would one go about finding a job and an apartment in new york or roosevelt island? Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  New York is a state. New York City is a city. NY, NY is used to refer to Manhattan. Roosevelt Island is a neighborhood in Manhattan that is physically seperated from the rest of the island. It's a decent area, but it's probably expensive because it is so close to Manhattan (take the (F) or Roosevelt Island Tram and you're on mainland Manhattan in one stop). It comes down to what your rent budget is and how far you're willing to travel. If you go far enough out in the outer boroughs, you can rent a whole house and divide it among your roommates, so you can get the same amount of space for less.
