Slaved erected Statue of Liberty?
-
Is it true that Slaves were used in the construction of Statue of liberty the way we see it today?
-
Answer:
Not likely--it was given to us by the French to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence--on July 4, 1876, long after the Civil War ended slavery, and even longer after slavery was ended in New York and New Jersey. And that's just when we got it--we didn't raise enough money to build the base for it until the 1880's.

No, that would have been really impossible as it was completed in 1876! There were no slaves in France or the US in that era.

Nonsense. Slavery was illegal in the US before Lady Liberty was even a seed of an idea. Why do you ask?
