If you're not going to be moving immediately you're wasting your time. Landlords in NY want people to move in immediately. There are millions of people every year that say they'll move to the Big Apple, but fewer actually follow through. Save your time and energy for when you're finally ready to make a commitment to this city.

Apartments sell out fast. A landlord isn't going to hold on to one for you. Look around in Harlem, check classified ads, ask people. Harlem's cheap. Rent is going to be between 1000 and 2000 a month, 1000 being really cheap. 1000 would probably get you a walk-up studio in a slightly iffy neighborhood.

For listings anywhere in the city, Craigslist and the New York Times are the prime sources. For Queens (and Long Island), Newsday. For Staten Island and parts of New Jersey, silive.com
