Various activities in NYC?

Going to NYC as a birthday treat for 12 yo boy - suggest activities?

We live in upstate NY and are thinking about going to NYC for a birthday treat - please suggest fun activities and delicious and cheap things to eat, especially desserts (i.e. birthday cake)! We've done Broadway in our last visit and that's a little too $$ for us so please suggest something else on the cheap - but REALLY, REALLY fun for both of us! As a mom I'm also having a birthday - our birthdays are right next day to each others' :) Thanks - hope you can give us a lot of great suggestions!

FAO Schwarts is always a blast. i love it there still and im 15. for cheap food you can eat from a food cart but i suggest not getting meat. you can get falafel which is basically fried chickpeas and other vegetables. for dessert i suggest Dylan candys shop.
