What is this statue/monument in New York?

I was watching friends, 'The One with the Donor' and in a street scene between cuts there is an unusual statue on the of the street. It looks like a giant dumpster or black rectangle/square thing standing on one of its corners. Unfortunately I couldn't find a picture. Does anyone know what this is?
