Cheap place to stay in NYC for one night?

  • My friend and I are going to a show at the Dominion Theater and Lounge in NY, at 428 Lafayette St, New York, NY. We are taking the Megabus down there, which will let us off at 7th Ave & 28th St. Our return bus departs from 10th Ave between 40th St and 41st St. We do not know the area at all, and are looking for a cheap (very cheap!) place to stay for one night somewhere near one of those three places. It can be a little farther away if the price is right, but we'd rather not get lost in NY trying to find our hotel :P Ideally the price would be under $100 a night. Doesn't have to be the greatest place or have a pool/amenities/anything fancy, really just need a place to sleep. Anybody have any suggestions as to where we could stay or how to go about finding a place? Thanks!

  • Answer:

The only place you can sleep for $100 or less is a Motel Six in Tampa, Florida. No hotel in New York is under $300 a night.

Your best bet would be to use airbnb.com . This is the absolute safest and cheapest way to travel if you're just passing through NYC. I don't recommend staying at a hostel because they're incredibly dirty, unsafe, and most likely you'll get ripped off by the sleazeballs running 'em. Anyhow, good luck, and have fun in the big apple!

Look at the living social website or halfoffdepot. They normally have deals no familiar with NYC but wanted to make this suggest because I did see a deal the other night for 89 at some hotel in Manhattan.

If you don't want to get lost, then do some reading/research and learn about the area the buses will be stopping. NYC is a grid in those areas, so, except for Broadway cutting through diagonally, it's very easy to know where you are [the streets and avenues are numbered sequentially]. Lots of maps available on the Internet and in guidebooks. Although Lafayette Street is more downtown, so it's not in a grid. If you go to Yahoo maps, you can enter any address and then ask for "nearby businesses", e.g. hotels. But I doubt you're going to find anything for < $100 - $200 is more like it. Or you could use Hotwire.com or Priceline.com.
