Things to do/places to see on the Lower East Side, NY?

  • I'll be heading up to Lower East Side, NY in two weeks (I'm from Philadelphia); to see a soccer game at the Sara D. Roosevelt Park, but what are some other places/things to see? I plan to stay overnight, so any type of night life is encouraged at night (good beer bars? not so much "club" type places), along with things to do/places to see, and places to eat during the day would be greatly appreciated.

    The oldest Beer Garden in NY is the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria Queens. You can get there via Subway from Manhattan, just take subway N or W to Astoria Boulevard (second to last stop). Walk 1 block to the intersection of 24th Avenue and 31st Street. They have music on Saturday and Sunday, and the atmosphere is pretty cool. Laid back, very much not clubby. OK - now I have to go there tonight - Thursday is Free Jazz! Have fun on your trip! If you don't feel like hopping a train, you can try Donnybrook or Boss Tweed's. Both Irish pubs, both on the LES. Donnybrook has better food.

I have to recommend the 7A Cafe on the corner of (you guessed it) 7th Street and Avenue A. The fusilli pasta with chicken is yummy and the atmosphere is relaxed and cool. If you'll be here on a Friday night, swing by the Nuyorican Poets Cafe on East 3rd Street and Avenue C and check out their poetry slam. McSorley's Old Ale House--the oldest bar in NYC--is on East 7th between 1st and 2nd Ave.
