How to take photos in NYC without looking like a tourist?

  • I live in Brooklyn and I don't go to Manhattan unless I have to. I like photography and would love to take pictures in Manhattan like central park and Brooklyn facing Manhattan. I hate looking like a tourist, I feel vulnerable to vendors and idiots that dare to ask for my money and I hate it. how do I not look like a tourist any ideas?

    i have had the same problem, esp since i use an SLR which can be equated to being a tourist. There is no hiding the camera, thats a fact. You either keep it packed up and take it out everytime you want to take a shot, or you keep it visible. What i like to do is keep it ready, but not around my neck, but rather has the pros do by keeping it wrapped around my arm and tucked against my body. this makes for quick and easy photos without standing out too much. Also, never forget your NY attitude. If someone calls you out, send it right back at them. Then they will know they are not dealing with a tourist Hope this helped, if you have any suggestions let me know as i consistantly think about this subject when going out to do a shoot in public

If you dress like a hipster, it's conceivable that you will look like an aspiring-photog hipster rather than a tourist (perhaps you are?). However, the real question is, why do you care? There is a difference between a tourist and an obnoxious tourist--don't block anybody's walking path or view, mostly. There is an easy way to deal with vendors and moochers -- IGNORE them. go about your business, and whether you live in NYC or are there for the weekend is really nobody else's business.
