Answer:
The only way you are going to get to the top of the Statue of Liberty is if you take some hallucinogenic drug. The inside of the Statue has been closed since 9/11. IF you get there early (first ferry) and IF you are lucky, you can get one of a very limited number of passes which will allow you to go up in the pedastal - you cannot get up into the statue itself. I climbed up to the crown when I was in the fourth grade - an elevator took us up in the base, and then we had to climb stairs - it was stuffy, smelled bad, lots of narrow stairs - once you were on the staircase you couldn't turn around - you had to climb all the way up and when we finally got to the crown and looked out the window, all we saw was water. My advice is take the free Staten Island Ferry - you'll get a good close up view. Then, if you really think you want to be closer, take the ferry to Liberty Island (be prepared to wait - both for the ferry to take you there and wait for a boat to take you off the island).

You can't. You can go in and look up at the structure that holds the skin up, but that's all. I recommend that people go to Ellis Island instead. The ferry stops at Liberty Island on the way so you can get an up-close look. Ellis Island has a lot more to see. Note: If you are going to NYC and have limited time, you might be better off skipping the Statue of Liberty all together. It can take a half a day of time between getting to the ferry, waiting for the ferry, riding the ferry out, looking around, waiting for a ferry to take you back, the trip back, etc. If you want to go someplace high up and look around, go to the Empire State Building or better yet, The Top of the Rock.

The statue of Liberty closed on sept 11, 2001, and has never reopened. You used to climb a single file stair case to the top, but the public are no longer allowed access. Initially I think the statue was closed because of worries about terrorism, but I think it remained closed due to health and safety reasons, and fire regulations. Last I heard they were trying to pass legislation to reopen, but it has not been okay'd as yet.
