What is New York like?

  • Okay so I'm planning on visiting New York during christmas break, and I've always wondered what it's really like. Is it just like the movies, with apartments and penthouses, bodegas on every corner, and no room to drive a car? And is it really dangerous? I've heard stories of how dangerous it is late at night, but I was planning on walking around staying up to enjoy the nightlife. So, whats New York really like? Whats your favorite part of the city? What should I be sure to check out while im there? (I'll be in New York City, but mostly Manhattan.)

Driving is extremely hard and parking is a headache; NYC is actually a very safe big city but, use common sense, be aware of your surroundings and who is around you; if you want nightlife there is plenty of it, and, again just use common sense when you are out late at night. NYC is sort of bike friendly - safe places to ride would be Central Park and Riverside Park. If you bike on the streets you are literally taking your life into your own hands, it isn't recommend. New York is WONDERFUL! You will have an amazing time. I've been out on the streets in Manhattan, by myself (I'm a woman), late at night and never felt scared or threatened. But I stayed in the NICE parts of town! I'm sure there are many, many neighborhoods where you wouldn't want to walk in broad daylight -- but those aren't the places where the 'tourists' go. Be sure to spend at least one day walking up and down 5th Avenue. Visit Trump Tower and Tiffany's and Steuben. Especially Steuben -- their showroom is AWESOME. The best bathroom is in Tiffany's. FAO Swartz is WONDERFUL, especially at Christmas. Have a blast!

After visiting NYC for about 2 months recently, I have mixed feelings about it. I LOVE Manhattan. There is nowhere in the US like it, and maybe nowhere else in the world quite like it. However, when I'd leave Manhattan and go to the other boroughs, the whole vibe would change and I'd feel kind of depressed. The rest of NYC reminds me too much of the bad parts of LA-just a bunch of ugly apartment buildings, shady people, dirty streets, cars, places that shut down early, etc. It's actually the safest large city in the US overall, so I wouldn't worry about crime, unless you're out in a rough part of Brooklyn or the Bronx late at night. I would just stay in Manhattan and spend all your time there, because there is nothing I liked about the rest of the city at all. Central Park is great, there are some nice museums, the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building, if you're into that touristy crap.
