    This all depends on where in New York City you want to live. Since it has to be near a subway stop, that means that you aren't really interested in living in Staten Island. So, you'd want to check newyork.craigslist.com & look at listings in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx or Queens. You may also want to look at the Village Voice listings too (available on-line). At a minimum, for what you are looking for--don't be surprised if you're looking at $2,000. and above. Things under $2,000 are there, but very rare. Good luck to you!

It really REALLY depends on which borough you want to live in... apartments in Manhattan are probably the most expensive. And even within Manhattan, there is a big range (I'm in a studio for $1300/month, but know people who pay over $2000). Just don't be surprised when some apartments are the size of a large closet. The Upper East Side is a good place to start looking, although if you look too far east, you end up far away from a subway line.
