How much is it to take a train from D.C. to NYC?

A Good Way to Drive from Washington DC to NYC?

  • I've driven to NYC from DC before, and it went fairly smoothly on the way there. We drove to New Jersey, parked there and rode a train into the city. Driving back took forever though, we were in solid traffic all the way back; I would estimate that we were on the road for at least 6 hours, but it may have been even more. Has anyone driven from DC into NYC? How long did it take? Are there better roads to travel on? Is there a way to drive into NYC and park near a metro and leave your car there the whole trip (rather than parking in New Jersey and taking a train)? We aren't comfortable driving in NYC traffic, but I'm thinking there may be a metro station far out enough to park near..?...?...

  • Answer:

Why drive? Take the bus! (chinatown, not greyhound) Watch movies and don't worry about parking. Bus is cheaper unless you have 3+ people, and that's if you only consider tolls and gas. Driving is not worth it at all if you consider the mileage you're putting on your car. The buses go almost hourly, trip lasts just as long, and it's more environmentally friendly! (btw, you can barter in NYC and usually get on a departing bus for $15) I am not affiliated with any bus company or the website below.

The best way to drive from Washington DC to NYC is to do so in a northeasterly direction, avoiding the Atlantic Ocean at all costs which might flood your engine.

It takes about 5 hours depending on traffic. Ultimately, you must go on I-95. At the beginning or end of the trip is ehere you might vary. If you're going to manhattan, the only reasonable train options would be the PATH train from NJ. It uuns between Newark Hoboken and Manhattan and is a very short ride.

Driving to New York from Washington can be really tricky. Since you have to time your departure/arrival to avoid the rush hours of two congested cities. . .not to mention Baltimore & Philadelphia in between! If I were you, I'd plan to leave DC after the morning rush hour if it is a weekday. This way, you'd avoid the rush hour in NYC. It should be (in theory) a pretty smooth trip. It can be done in approximately 5 hours.
