How long does Mardi Gras last?

How much does it cost to go to a Mardi Gras ball and which is the cheapest one?

  • My girlfriend wants me to take her to a Mardi Gras ball. The problem is, I'm a college student, and haven't worked since summer, so my cash is kind of tight. Anyone know how much it would cost to attend a Mardi Gras ball and what to wear? Some are cheaper than others I assume. Does anyone know which ones might be closer to my price range?

  • Answer:

You can't purchase tickets to a Mardi Gras ball except for the Krewe of Orpheus (see http://www.kreweoforpheus.net/), and they are $135 per person this year.. As far as I know, all the other balls are by invitation only. Dress is formal. Tux for men and floor-length dresses for women. I've been to several (but not Orpheux) and, to be honest, they are mostly boring. They aren't the kind of ball that most people think of. You only get to dance if you have a "call out" from a krewe member, and a call-out is only for one dance. That said, there are some krewes that have large parties after their parades instead of balls. I believe that some of these are by ticket these days, but I don't know which ones. For more information, go to http://www.mardigrasneworleans.com/. You don't say where you live, but most balls are the night of the krewe's parade. If you are coming to New Orleans only for the weekend through Mardi Gras Day, you are limited in what you will be in town for. Check out the websites.

While there are a few Krewes that offer tickets to the public for after parties no one sells tickets to their balls. You either have to be a member of a Krewe or know someone in the Krewe who is willing to give you tickets. The Krewe of Endymion's extravaganza would probably be the closest you could come to experiencing a ball, and honestly it's really not like a traditional ball. Frankly, I think you would probably find a traditional ball kind of boring. Basically you watch people walk around on stage, watch people get presented to the King and Queen, and get to dance a little. Then if you want you can purchase tickets to the supper dance after the ball.
