    All of the real hotels are safe, with the possible exception of the Canal Street Hotel (which used to be a Days Inn) in the 1600 block of Canal. It has fallen on hard times. I usually recommend visitors stay in the French Quarter, followed by the Central Business District and the Warehouse District. Check travel sites like Expedia & Orbitz for deals and also check the hotel websites once you narrow your choices. Go to www.frenchquarterhotels.com for some nice non-chain hotels in the French Quarter. The best "New Orleans" experience is probably via the established hotels like the Omni Royal Orleans, Monteleone, and Royal Sonesta - which are all in the French Quarter. Hope you have a good trip!
