What is Mardi Gras?

What should I bring to New Orleans (mardi gras)?

  • I am going to New Orleans to visit some friends at Tulane, and I am going during Mardi Gras from the 20-25th of February. I have been before, but I have never been during mardi gras, what should I take/ what should I expect?

  • Answer:

You don't need anything special. New Orleans during Mardi Gras is very casual unless you expect to attend a formal Carnival Ball. If that is the case then check with your friends to find out what is required. It IS fun to wear a costume on Mardi Gras Day (the 24th) so bringing one would be a good idea. It can be anything, and it's OK to recycle an old Halloween or New Years Eve costume. The weather is not entirely predictable, so pack for cool (not cold) weather and check the forecast just before you leave home to see if packing adjustments are needed. Check www.mardigras.com for more info on Carnival in New Orleans. The FAQ section may be particularly useful. Hope you have a great time!

Comfortable shoes are a MUST! Though public transit will be running, the allure of the Mardi Gras is that it must be seen by walking through the crowds. Like any gathering of people, you will possibly run into pickpockets, so take steps to protect yourself. You can search the internet for methods to prevent yourself from being targeted. You will probably want to take pictures, so be careful with that camera. It makes you a target in two ways. First, it marks you as a tourist. Second, that camera is itself a tempting target. Having said that, don't worry that we are a bunch of lawless thieves. In fact, the thieves come for the Mardi Gras. We have a few locals, but the pickpockets come with the crowds and leave when Mardi Gras is over. They usually aren't locals. Watch out for people who aren't used to the uninhibited nature of Mardi Gras. They don't see the kind of street party that is a typical Mardi Gras day event, so they celebrate in a way to which they are not accustomed. And thereby get solidly blitzed, start acting like idiots, and eventually barf. So if you were wearing comfortable shoes, be sure they can be cleaned easily. Because it is not "if you step in someone's barf", it is "WHEN you step..." Further advice. Discuss IN ADVANCE with your friends what they will do when it is time to potty. Because bars and restaurants will rarely allow anyone to use their rest rooms as public facilities. They will post signs, "rest rooms for customers only" - and the city has ordinances that support their statement. You can actually be arrested for trespass if you are careless about where you do your passing. And DON'T, DON'T, DON'T let it loose in the street. You are unlikely to be arrested for public drunken behavior, but you will be arrested in a heartbeat for public urination. So make plans.

if you want to be a trashy toursit then show your boobs. Locals do not. Just bring clothes like you would on any vacation except casual! No heels. Bring money and a jacket in case. Also bring a costume if you want to dress up on fat tuesday then bring a costume.

NOLASaints

Bring your ID and cash. I don't suggest bringing much more than what will fit in your pockets. As far as what to expect...expect the largest, drunkest, dirtiest, most crowded street party you have ever seen in your life.

stoneytreehugger

well, for fat tuesday many people dress up in costumes so you could bring one. Other than that, maybe just some layers, it can be hard to predict weather at that time of year. Have fun.
