New Orleans-Winter Fishing and other questions?
-
I'll be in New Orleans for a week at the end of December and looking to get some fishing in. Open to freshwater and saltwater but not looking to hire a guide or rent a boat, since I have random time slots open. -What are some of the best piers for fishing? -Are there places with rent out fishing tackle to be used on these piers? -What are some other shore fishing spots in lakes/ponds etc for freshwater fish? Any recommendations would be great. I do a lot of fishing out of state but just want to catch decent sized fish. All fish will be released and of course I'll procure a license first. -Also interested in finding a cheap hotel in near the French Quarter. Any recommendations based on experience would be good. Recommendations regarding Blues bars and restaurants would be highly appreciated as well!

Sorry you are not getting any answers, but there is not much fishing like you describe immediately around New Orleans. Despite a common belief, NOLA is not on the ocean so there are no "fishing piers". etc. like in some cities. You can fish at City park and on the lakefront (Lake Pontchartrain), but I have no idea what type fish are to be caught as the lake (brackish water) is best known for shrimp. http://www.neworleanscitypark.com/fishing.html http://www.neworleanscitypark.com/fishguide.html You can get a fishing license online, at large sporting goods stores, and maybe at City Park: https://www2.la.wildlifelicense.com/start.php?Licensing=1 For hotels, there are many, many choices. . Check the travel sites (expedia, travelocity, etc.) and also check the hotel websites. Go to www.frenchquarterhotels.com for some non-chain hotels in the FQ. The Hotel Villa Convento is often the hotel inside the FQ with the best rates and one of the few that offers free parking (off-site) for guests). www.villaconvento.com Do realize that New Year's Eve is a huge event in New Orleans so "cheap" may not be realistic if your visit coincides with the new year. There is always music, but the bands change: Go to www.bestofneworleans.com and click on Music then Listings or to www.offbeat.com and click on Listings, then Music. Music clubs often advertise "No Cover", meaning there is no charge for entering. However, clubs with "No Cover" often require that customers buy a beverage each for every "set" of music (which can be every 20 minutes) so KNOW THE PRICE before you sit down. Clubs do that because some people will sit in the club all evening drinking nothing (clubs only make money from the drinks they sell - not from the music). It is also a good idea to pay for each round of drinks (in clubs on Bourbon Street) as it is delivered so there can't be any confusion at the end of the evening. Preservation Hall has traditional live Jazz, and doesn’t serve alcohol so all ages are welcome: www.preservationhall.com The Palm Court restaurant is very nice, has moderate prices, and offers live jazz starting at 8:00pm: 1204 Decatur Street, (504) 525-0200. www.palmcourtjazzcafe.com Snug Harbor is another restaurant + jazz club: http://www.snugjazz.com/site/ The Napoleon House restaurant is at 500 Chartres Street in the FQ, and has a menu of great local dishes: www.napoleonhouse.com Buffa’s is a neighborhood restaurant at 1001 Esplanade Avenue that is open 27/7 and may have live entertainment: www.buffasrestaurant.com More restaurant suggestions: http://www.10best.com/New_Orleans,LA/Restaurants/ An incomplete guide to bars & clubs: http://www.10best.com/New_Orleans,LA/Nightlife/ www.neworleanscheapdrinks.com http://www.nola.com/bar-guide/ Some famous drinks are VERY potent compared with regular cocktails that have only 1 to 1 ½ ounces of alcohol. For example, a Hurricane is basically 3 or 4 ounces of rum in something like red Kool-Aid, and a Hand Grenade has at least 4 ½ ounces of Everclear + rum + vodka mixed with melon liquor. They don’t necessarily taste like an alcoholic beverage and it is easy to over-indulge.
