Answer:
Being from Louisiana this is a topic i know. Every year, more than 4 million people arrive in 'The Big Easy' to be part of what is often billed as the "greatest free party on Earth" -- Beginning in January, the city of New Orleans starts a variety of festivities that culminate with Mardi Gras Day, or Fat Tuesday -- the day before Ash Wednesday and Lent. For about two weeks before Fat Tuesday, residents and visitors alike enjoy dozens of parades with imaginative floats bearing costumed party-goers, who toss colored beads and other trinkets into the cheering crowds. The parties continue into the night as revelers seek out distinctive "Nawlins" music as well as Cajun and Creole food.

(mär´dē grä) , last day before the fasting season of Lent. It is the French name for Shrove Tuesday. Literally translated, the term means "fat Tuesday" and was so called because it represented the last opportunity for merrymaking and excessive indulgence in food and drink before the solemn season of fasting. In the cities of some Roman Catholic countries the custom of holding carnivals for Mardi Gras has continued since the Middle Ages. The carnivals, with spectacular parades, masked balls, mock ceremonials, and street dancing, usually last for a week or more before Mardi Gras itself. Some of the most celebrated are held in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, Nice, and Cologne. Personally: I love Mardi Gras. The parades are fun and exciting.

1 day Mardi Gras is french for Fat Tuesday. Tuesday is just one day. The celebration actually lasts about a week and is culminated on Fat Tuesday.

Mardi Gras season lasts about 12 days or so. We have parades on those days until Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday in French. The big parades that "roll" on that day are Zulu, Rex, individual truck floats, and most recently, the Krewe of America.

Mardi Gras is only one day, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (Mardi is French for Tuesday). There is also a Lundi Gras, which is the day before Mardi Gras (Lundi is French for Monday). However, the city of New Orleans knows how to party and two days are simply not sufficient, so it gets stretched out to at least a month before Ash Wednesday, then all the little Catholics go to church to get ash on their foreheads, confess their sins and start not eating meat on Fridays for a month.
