Moving to Fort Lauderdale in a year. I have some questions?
-
I plan on attending Broward College for the Fall 2010 semester, and right now I'm just doing some research on the Fort Lauderdale area. I will be moving there from New York, so its going to be a big change! I know there's going to be tons of humidity and hot weather, but I actually enjoy ridiculous humidity more than I enjoy the bitter cold of upstate New York. At least you can go outside without ten extra layers of clothing! I'm settled on Fort Lauderdale because its a major city in South Florida, but the crime rate isn't as bad as it is in Miami. Anyway, time for my questions. I know there are areas of the city where the crime rate is pretty bad just like in all of South Florida, but what are some streets/areas of the city that are in a good neighborhood? What areas should I definitely avoid? How are job opportunities down there right now? I know the economy is in bad shape all across the country but its easier to get a job in some places than others. Its a semi tourist city so I'm sure there is enough entertainment for me in there, but what are some specific things to do? What are the names of some awesome clubs? Is there anything else I should know about Fort Lauderdale before I move there? Any local information that would make the move easier or less stressful? Thanks so much in advance for any help I receive!! =]

Answer:
There are so many (ex) New Yorkers living down here that it is sometimes called the sixth borough. Across much of North Broward & into West Palm Beach, people originally from NY outnumber everybody. There are jobs but like everyplace you have to hunt for them. The pay scale in Florida is much lower then NY but there is no state or city income tax. Start shopping for insurance now. Your going to be shocked at the prices. Generally speaking, the closer to the beach the better the neighborhood. Downtown Ft Lauderdale around the Las Olas area is safe & is the prestige section of town. Avoid the area around the railroad tracks near Dixie Highway until you get familiar with the city. In my opinion 99% of Broward is safe. Auto traffic, not personal crime, is the danger here....but l am sure others will disagree.. Good Luck

It's Safe. Ft Lauderdale beach is beautiful at night... there are areas in Ft Lauderdale... (Close to downtown Ft Lauderdale) that I would definitely avoid at night. I grew up in Ft Lauderdale but now live in NJ and work in NYC... I miss Ft Lauderdale terribly... and if my partner could move there now I would be there in a New York minute... lol You will absolutely love it there. Good Luck!

its tough to answer some of those questions. i dont know what you deem as a good neighborhood. take a vacation down there for a week or so... check different places out...that way by time you move...you already know alot about the area
