  • hi so mean and my family LOVEEEE shelling and we r vacationing in ft lauderdale fl and we heard that sanibel is gr8 for shelling so we r gonna make a 1 day trip to go up there but i was jw if it really is al that good for shelling (not like clam shells tho we like conks) and iis it any good for snorkling and stuff not just shelling? and hotels do u reccomend (that r on a good shelling beach) thanks!

    Sanibel is well known for small shelling on the beach, but you won't find good conks there. Snorkeling is hit and miss, depending upon water quality, and rather boring. However, the entire island is just one long beach and you can walk any of it. Find some public parking and enjoy. The bigger shells are in the Keys, although you may have to wade the water to find them. Be careful about pulling live shells out of the water...keep it under cover. Snorkeling is more exciting in the Keys because the corals are close to the shore. Check out Pennekamp State Park (just as you enter the keys) and Bahia Honda State Park (further down the road). Be sure to wear some foot protection when wading because while the coral is nice to look at, it can slice you up too.

The shelling on Sanibel is excellent. Sanibel and Captiva are shaped like a boomerang and have an east-west orientation rather than the usual north-south barrier island positioning. Sanibel sticks out in the gulf and acts like a giant scoop for shells moved to the North by coastal winds and currents from the South. Algiers beach is a nice wide beach perfect for shelling along the Gulf of Mexico. Some say this is the finest stretch of shelling in the world. There are plenty of places to stay from condos to cottages to large resorts. High season generally begins in Late December.
