Where can I find upholstery classes in LA?

How do I make it for a short period of time in LA!?

  • So....Im a Junior in college in ILL. I'm a Journalism major with a minor in English. I really want to go to LA this summer because in a year and a half I AM moving there. I love LA, the opportunities, the diversity, and weather. When I am done with my undergrad I want to go LA or close by to get a Masters in either Media Studies or PR and film. I am not one of them people looking to go to LA to be a star I just really like it. So I want to go this summer before my senior year to feel it out a little more (since the 2 times I went were for only a couple of days at a time), check out my list of schools, and network. Thing is idk where to start..... First I need a way to find a temp job A place to stay Maybe take some classes or a internship I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on ways to survive a summer in LA and ways to find a temp job??? I have enough money to stay like 2/3 weeks but I want to be there the entire summer I am from Chicago and really do not want to go home because I want to really start my life out there in less than a year and a half after college and want to see if its what I want. I know people move to places like LA, NY, Chicago, etc all the time I just want to know WHERE DO I START!!

  • Answer:

There is no journalism opportunities in Southern California. The print media is about 1/5 the size it was 10 years ago = all those former journalist are still out of work or have gone into different careers - this includes everything from the LA Times to Variety. The online sources are not located in Southern California. For example - LA Times is owned by Tribune which is in Chicago. They don't need to pay Los Angeles wages to have someone type up articles. I met a women who is about 28 years old. Graduated from USC in journalism in 3 years, got a job at CNN directly out of school, the show has been canceled, she blogged for awhile at minimum wage, and now she is the assistant editor for a weekly community newspaper making just barely more than minimum wage. Come to Los Angeles if you want. But don't expect to be a journalist when you come.

You're not going to be able to rent an apartment, that's for sure. Maybe you should check out a hostel. If you are checking out schools, contact that campus housing department for leads on getting a place to stay. As for temp jobs, try places like Disneyland or Universal Studios. They always need summer help.

You should check out extended stay hotels. You can rent a room/suite in one of them by the month. Also look around for opportunities to sub-let an apartment for the summer or someone who needs a house/apartment sitter for the summer. Check out the Student Housing ads at UCLA to look for short-term rentals (to students) in the area. Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Universal City Walk all hire temps during the summer, usually students between semesters. Smaller retail outlets such as Dollar Stores often employ temps during the summer months. The only thing you can really do is go to the Employment Office and ask about temp work or just ask around, colleges usually keep a list of places that employ temps during the summer and most cafes, etc. would hire waitstaff for the summer (if you're not opposed to working as a waiter).
