What does "X" stand for in "LAX?

I am curious about the abbreviation of LAX airport. What is LAX stand for?

  • I know that LA is Los Angeles, but I am always curious about the X, is it for express? does anyone know? Thank you!!!!

  • Answer:

"Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation ... at that time, LA served as the designation for Los Angeles International Airport. But, with the rapid growth in the aviation industry, the designations expanded to three letters, and LA became LAX. The letter X does not otherwise have any specific meaning in this identifier."

Every air"line" in the world must have 2 letters, i.e. AA, DL, AC, etc and every air"port" must have 3 letters. And since the letters cannot be used twice, letters that are not even in the name of the airport can be used. LAX...Los Angeles (LA) and the X stands for nothing. it just had to have 3 letters. Like AA for an airline could be American Airlines OR Alaska Airlines, one had to change.. AA for American and AK for Alaska. HP is Southwest Airlines because SA is used for another airlines. The same for Airports. They try and use letters that are in the name, but that is not always possible. There are thousands of airports in the world.

I believe that the additional "X" was added to "Los Angeles" airport years ago when all the major airports in the country went to a "three" initial identification for baggage identification purposes. I believe they just added the "X" to LA.

I believe 'LAX' stands for Los Angeles International Airport, not sure about the express, but Logan in Boston, has international and express without an 'X'' in it's abbreviation. I think we use way too many codes like LAX, ATL, WTF, LOL, LMAO, ETC....can anyone spell a complete word? Just a thought...

They just added an X because airport codes have to have 3 letters.

I think the X is the runway configuration which requires a stop light in the middle...but I'm really just guessing......
