How to promote a play in Los Angeles?

Where in Los Angeles, CA can my friend volunteer in a theater production as a character in the act/play?

  • She hasn't done any volunteer work and she's already a junior in high school. She loves acting. So, I'm trying to find this for her. She's willing to go anywhere around Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley.

  • Answer:

You can't "volunteer" to act in a play. Especially in this town - you'd have to audition. Even for relatively small parts. Acting in this town is not "volunteer work". She might be able to sign up for Extra work in movies, but being in school - that might tough. Tell her to start were we all start - school plays, and drama classes. Work in community theatre - onstage, off stage, handing out tickets....

Why does she not try her own high schools drama department...hopefully they still exist. Other than that have her check with local community theaters. A lot of these are Non-Profit and are always looking for volunteers. Another good site that you might want to look at is http://www.volunteermatch.org/ In the search put in your Zip Code and distance. In the Interest area select "Arts and Culture". This should give you several places to look at. Edit: The below poster is technically correct you can not just "volunteer" to be in a play, you do have to audition. But if you pass the audition you can be in the play and because the community theaters rarely pay actors you are in reality a "volunteer".
