"Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation based on the weather station at the airports. So, at that time, LA served as the designation for Los Angeles International Airport. But, with the rapid growth in the aviation industry, the designations expanded to three letters, and LA became LAX. The letter X does not otherwise have any specific meaning in this identifier.[11] Portland International Airport in Oregon also has a similar code: PDX. "LAX" is also used for the International Port of Los Angeles located in San Pedro and for the Amtrak-serving Union Station in downtown." Wikipedia can be your friend. ;)

All airports have 3 letter codes. Some like Philadelphia (PHL) easily make sense. Others like Orlando (MCO) have stories behind them. The X stands for International. It's not the only airport where the X stands for international. Jacksonville International (JAX) is the same.

It does stand for Los Angeles Int'l Airport. All airports use three-letter acronyms. Not all of them are intuitive and X is used frequently for International. Portland International is PDX.

I think they named it LAX because it makes you feel calm (reLAX) even though traveling there is stressful. Personally, I use LGB, which makes me feel a lot more lax.

It comes from the name of the weather station. See wikipedia's LAX article.
