BEST PLACE TO STAY IN OR NEAR LOS ANGELES?
-
I'm planning to celebrate my 21st birthday in LA during October. However, I am unfamiliar with the area. I heard that staying in downtown Los Angeles isn't the best thing to do. Some of the things I want to do when i'm there are go to a Lakers game (Staples Center) and go to either Venice Beach or Santa Monica Pier. Also, I heard there are TONS of things in downtown to do, such as night clubs, walk of fame, etc. Do you have any suggestions as to where I should stay? Nothing to ridiculous expensive, just somewhere mainly to sleep and get dressed. We're planning on doing a LOT of sightseeing and what not! Thanks

Answer:
Actually, all the good clubs and the Walk of Fame are in Hollywood. Since LA is so spread out, there is no single place that is close to EVERYTHING. Most people who come here tend to stay in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Anaheim. In Hollywood, I recommend the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, or Hollywood Heights (formerly Holiday Inn Walk of Fame), all near Hollywood and Highland. In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced. In Anaheim, I recommend the Howard Johnson (HoJo) Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. There is also a nice place in Burbank called the Best Western Media Center, very close to Warner, NBC, and Universal Studios.

Understand that downtown and Venice/Santa Monica are about 15 miles apart. Downtown is not the best place to stay. But it's a lot better than it used to be. If money wasn't an object, I would suggest staying at the new hotels at L.A. Live, which is the brand new complex they just built next to the Staples Center (where the Lakers play). You'll find the Nokia Theatre there, along with the new Grammy Museum, and a lot of new restaurants and clubs. You could literally walk from the hotel to the Lakers game in about two minutes. A giant tower (skyscraper) just went up at L.A. Live, which holds two new hotels. One is way too expensive: the Ritz-Carlton. But the other, the "JW Marriot L.A. Live", is a little more reasonable, depending on your budget, and how long you plan to stay. If it's just for the one night, you could splurge for your birthday.
