What are some fun places to go in Los Angeles and Southern California?

Where are the fun places to go and meet people in Los Angeles for an Australian guy?

  • I've never been overseas before and I am off to study in Mexico City between August-November 2011. In both July and December I intend to travel through parts of California, USA. As someone who'd like to meet people, I'm not really sure where I should go. So far I've found USA Hostels in Hollywood and thought I might hang out there for a few weeks. I'm by myself on this trip, so wanted to ask some advice: where are the good places to make friends and meet fun loving people (guys and girls)? Do people generally like Australians on the West Coast? Are there some good social spots anyone could recommend? Thanks in advance.

    The USA Hostel is a good place to stay. You'll meet lots of fun, like-minded travelers. LA isn't really a great social place. People tend to keep to themselves. Kind of "you do your thing, I'll do mine". I suppose you could go clubbing, if you like to meet outgoing folks. People love Aussies here. Ever since Paul Hogan, Americans have really loved Aussies. And so many American children grew up with the Wiggles, and watching Steve Irwin, that they are quite comfortable with our friends from the land of Oz. Have fun!

You should be much more worried about your safety in Mexico City than in Los Angeles. The country is in a full-fledged violent gang war. Remember don't take the green Volkswagen Beetle taxis in Mexico. They aren't safe for tourists. Santa Monica, Huntington Beach, Newport Peninsula and Hermosa Beach have a large number of 20 somethings and bars or pubs. With your accent you'll be especially loved by the ladies unless you're ugly as sin. Sharkeez is a popular sports bar chain with locations in all of those towns plus Manhattan Beach. Beware though, people are flaky. Meaning they might make plans with you at the bar, but then when you call to confirm they'll have made other plans which don't include you.
