Visiting California area in two weeks...?

  • Does anyone know any good places to visit from anywhere about 5 hours from LA...? Like is it really fun in Las Vegas for a family with 14 year old and 12 year old? No spots in LA though, I've already seen a lot their. Pretty much spots either sort of mainstream or not really, because California is just so vast and so are the surrounding areas, it's impossible not to have some good spots not overrun with tourist spots. Also, for the food, I'm vegan so restaurants that are like steakhouses or grills or the main food is meat...it won't really help :) and are their any restaurants or fast food places that are like only in the CA area? If you know any, can you also recommend a place to visit nearby? Thanks Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!! and SORRY for the lengthy question!

Vegas is not great for kids that age, unless you go to Circus Circus and blow a lot of money. There is nothing for kids to do there, since the main draw is gambling. Kids can swim in the hotel pool, but that's about it. How about the Mammoth Lakes area? That's about 5 hours. Bishop is the gateway to the Sierras. The town of Mammoth Lakes has plenty of places to eat, and you can even get vegan food. Mammoth Mountain is some of the best skiing anywhere, and in the other 3 seasons, you can hike, bike, fish and explore the area. Grumpy's in town will sell you a good meatless (soy) burger. If you don't want to drive that far, then how about San Diego or Big Bear? Both are about 2-3 hours away. As for restaurants unique to SoCal, that would be In-N-Out Burger. SoCal is the birthplace of the fast food burger, so this is where the best ones are. However, you can order a grilled cheese (bun & cheese)at In-N-Out, or a veggie burger (bun, lettuce, tomato, no cheese). It's on the secret unpublished menu. Claim Jumper also has vegetarian food on their menu. They are in other states as well, but they started here.

Las Vegas can be whatever you want it to be. There's enough entertainment for children. There's also plenty of fun things around L.A. to do with kids. As far as food goes, L.A. is loaded with vegetarian or vegan restaurants, which is unique to begin with.

Vegas with young kids wont be that much fun. I recommend San Diego...it's only a 2-3 hour drive and LOTS of kid friendly things there......San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Safari Zoo. Near LA itself, there's Disneyland....Universal City Studios is very kid friendly and fun for the whole family. Knotts berry Farm or Six Flags. And most restaurants have vegetarian/vegan options on the menu...I mean, don't expect fast food places to have that, but you know what I mean. If you want something different, Ethiopian food is VERY vegitarian friendly, not sure about vegan but you can call and find out once you're here.
