How much does an average director make?

How much does day care director make in Beverly Hills?

  • I am getting associate degree in early childhood development which gives me a licensing as director of a child care center or day care center and I thinking about relocating to Beverly Hills and I was wondering how much does it pay and would I be able to live in a condo or a loft?

  • Answer:

Wow, Whitney, you really need a reality check. First, Andy's Mom, you weren't very helpful in your answer. Giving the price per child isn't very helpful unless Whitney is going to start her own business, and that's not what she asked. Despite the fact that we make a big deal about how much we care for our children, day care employees still make very little. And you're missing something very important here: You're assuming that Beverly Hills is just like where you live. You're trying to apply your own knowledge and experience into a different environment. While that usually works, it won't in this case. You see, many people in Beverly Hills don't need day care for their kids. They hire nannies, au pairs, and sometimes mannies. Since many people in BH are wealthy (and older, too), you just don't have day care centers all over town. For the people that do send their kids to day care centers, they are almost always associated with a private school. If that is the case, those schools have directors already, and generally stay until they retire. Bottom line: The positions just aren't out there, and for those few that do exist, the salaries are not openly discussed. If you want to do something like that in this town, you would basically have to open your own business. If you want to live in BH, realize it's obscenely expensive. A condo in a normal part of town might cost $400K, but costs about $1mil in BH. You really cannot just come from anywhere and live in BH. You need to have succeeded already somewhere else. That's how it works.

Typically children in BH or other well-off areas of LA go to more of a pre-preschool or preschool, than a daycare center. Even what is called daycare is more like a full day preschool, including at church schools. Each school or daycare may have a philosophy that the employees have to be well versed in -- like Montessori, Dewey or Piaget. In wealthy areas there seems to be more family child care providers (in the director's home) than daycare centers for the little ones under 2 yrs old, or the parents have nannies. My son was at 3 preschools (from 18 months - 5 yrs) around LA, and at every one the teachers and directors either had or almost had their teaching degrees, some had their masters, even at Co-ops. Some of the private schools have preschool or preK, but the director would usually be someone with a teaching degree. In a city like BH, an important part of the director's duty would be to have great long-term relationships with the headmasters and admissions officers at private elementary schools. There are a lot of other activities for little kids around LA, including Beverly Hills. You might want to look into programs like Gymboree, Kindermusic, My Gym, YMCAs, Boys & Girls club, camps, etc, so you have more options. Also, after-school programs at private schools are often run by non-teachers, although typically they are studying for their teaching degree. The pay is low, even teachers at the top private schools make less to the same as public school teachers. So it would be very difficult to live in BH on the salary of a school employee. Nanny might also be another option. There are more daycare centers in the less affluent areas of LA, unfortunately, pay is not very good. You might want to look into Head Start Preschools and the LA Universal Preschool Program, links are on the page below. I somewhat disagree with the answer above me, I have looked into daycare in several areas of LA County, and the price does vary from city to city, however the price difference is not really that much. My son is currently in a private daycare about 20min from Beverly Hills, and the going rate right now is around $160/per week/per child.

Probably the same as anywhere else. That's ho wit works: just because there are rich people around, does not necessarily mean they would pay more for ANYTHING. In fact, they would probably pay less. That's why trickle down does not work. Rich people are stingy. How do you think they got that way? I live in a richie town in CO and service people actually make less than in other towns, including directors.

I don't think you would be able to have a business or even live in Beverly Hills PERIOD! What's wrong with Hollywood,Pasadena,Whittier, Burbank, or even Long Beach??
