Do some elementary kids go to summer school because their parents work?

Almost 50% of students who attend LA Unifed Schools are in year round programs. This means that instead of having a large chuck of time off during the summer, they will have smaller chucks spread out over the entire year. - This greatly reduces overcrowding in the schools = about 1/5 of the students don't attend each day - This is also great for the students - in homes where education & reading may not be the forefront activity, the students do nothing academic during the time off. If they have 3 months off, they are likely to end up being 3 months behind. When students have 4-5 weeks off at a time there isn't this major set back (they are still in the school routine).

Back in the old days, some kids went to summer school because they would drive their moms crazy if they stayed at home. As budget cuts increased, summer school was only for kids who needed to repeat a class. Now, there is no summer school at all.
