Most convenient place to move for an actor in LA? (in regards to acting agencies, acting auditions, etc.)?
-
I'm trying to make preparations to move down there (currently live in San Francisco) but I have no clue which areas would be most beneficial. I'm not rich either so obviously Beverly Hills is out of the question. I'm not even sure where most acting agencies are located. Any help/advice/tips would be great! :):)

Answer:
Outsiders NEVER get it. There is NO convenient place, because there is no single place where agencies are concentrated. They are all over the place: Burbank, Glendale, Hollywood, West LA, Century City, Culver City, and Atwater to name just a few. Auditions can also be anywhere. There are studios spread out from Chatsworth to San Pedro (about 50 miles apart). This type of question tells me that you don't know what you're doing, and destined for failure. My advice is to stay in SF, learn more about the business, then move down here.

There's no convenient place. Casting calls can happen just about anywhere, which why you're going to need a reliable mode of transportation to get you from Point A to Point B.
All aspects of the entertainment business are located all over LA, from Santa Monica to Pasadena. Many actors live in North Hollywood or other areas of the valley because they are cheaper than other areas, near freeways, and north of the westside where a lot of stuff happens, and west of the studios in the Burbank/Glendale areas. In North Hollywood, you can expect to pay about $900 for an ok single, and about $1200 for an ok one bedroom, maybe a little less, but you'll want to check out the neighborhood carefully. There are ok areas in the valley, and not-so-ok, and downright icky. You can't count on photos in ads, you really need to see the building and neighborhood, and it can change block to block. Since you will need to be taking acting lessons, all working actors do, even the most famous, you might want to find a school and try to live near that because it should be a constant in your life. Acting class is also a great connection to what is going on in the industry. You may not get any real auditions (not cattle calls) for quite awhile, even actors that support themselves by acting may only get one audition a week. You can't count on making money as an actor. You need to belong to SAG (Screen Actors Guild) union to work at jobs that pay anything. Only 5 percent of their members make more than $75,000 a year from acting, and 2/3 of members make less than $1000 a year from acting. But, you can't join SAG too soon, even if you get the opportunity, because if you don't have enough experience, you won't be hired on SAG jobs, so you need to work a lot of free/very low pay jobs first, like student films and small independent films to build up a resume to be employable. Even those jobs are competitive. You should expect to do a lot of driving (hopefully), and a lot of sitting in traffic. So you need a reliable car. Jobs are very tough to find here now, especially entry level positions, because over-qualified people who were laid-off are taking those jobs, and right now, high school kids. Most of the high school kids I know have summer jobs already, employers like hiring them for a variety of reasons. You can expect it to take 4 - 6 months or even longer to find a full time entry level job unless you get lucky. If you're not much older than high school or college age, it can also be a more competitive time to look for acting jobs as kids who don't audition during the school year do during the summer. Be very careful when looking for an agent. There are "legit" agents who aren't good agents -- meaning that they don't look for jobs for you, they don't really work for you, they give you info on cattle calls, auditions that any one can find out about because it's advertised publicly, and if you book one of those jobs, they still take their percentage. They don't get info on auditions from many casting directors as they represent anyone, so they have a high percentage of actors who can't act, which just wastes the casting director's time. Getting a good agent is very difficult, because the agent makes money only when you work, and if you aren't booking jobs, they aren't getting paid, so they only represent the actors who will work a lot, and make them money. They can only represent so many actors, so they must pick those that book jobs. It is very common for actors to have intensive private coaching before looking for an agent, it's that important. If you don't have an agent in SF, that is a bit of a problem, are you that new at acting or ? If you're that new, you should expect that you won't have much luck getting a good agent or booking jobs for a long time, the competition here is tough. Being an actor is expensive, you must have great headshots, acting and other lessons, lots of car expenses, gym membership, hair, dermatologist etc, nice clothes for going out to network, variety of clothes for auditions, etc. Don't forget to add in everything when figuring a budget. Since you're so close, why not come down here to check out the situation, see where you might want to rent, get an idea of the driving situation, find an acting school, audition for agents (if you're ready, don't do it before you are, because you likely won't get another chance), look for a job, and then figure out how much it's going to cost you. Be very careful with rentals, there are so many scams. Give yourself the best chance of succeeding by being prepared. Good luck!
