What good colleges are there?

What are some good colleges in California for me?

  • Hello, im from vegas. I'll be applying for some colleges this year, but I'm having trouble finding the right one. I would like a college where it isnt overcrowded, preferably easier to make friends. I don't mind being near the beach (love a good view), but I also want to be around the nightlife, restaurants, etc. I'll be living in my own apartment, any recommendations for good, a little upper class apartment (but not OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive) I have good money to spare, but you know what I mean. Basically any colleges where it's not a dud and has a good, pleasing atmosphere would be good. I have good grades as well.

  • Answer:

Since you said you have good grades than apply to Cal Tech. It isn't a dud and it has a nice pleasing atmosphere. It's located in Pasadena which has tons of shopping and nightlife. Cal Tech isn't overcrowded either because you have to have a genius IQ to be accepted. They have a great astrophysics department and a secret society that is infamous for their very complicated pranks.

What do you consider good grades? You will need a about a 4.0 unweighted GPA (with a rigorous curriculum), and a 2000+ SAT to be admitted to the very good CA colleges, like UCLA and USC, it's very competitive. Obvsman gave you the rundown on price of apartments, expensive. Typically, you would live on campus your first two years, most colleges prefer that, even to the point it's almost a requirement. The cost of attending UCLA, UCSB, and the other UC's, as a non-resident student is $52,000 a year cost of attendance, for tuition, non-resident fee ($22,000+ a year), room & board, books & supplies, personal expenses, probably no car, on a very very tight budget. Realistically, you'd probably need about $2000 more for expenses, plus about $3000 for summer expenses here if you stay, or airfare home. USC is $58,000 cost of attendance per year, which is what many of the private schools cost, like Occidental, Caltech, Stanford, Loyola Marymount, Chapman, and Pepperdine. It isn't worth it to move out here and pay non-resident fees for the Cal States or community colleges. FYI: UNLV cost of attendance living with your parents and paying them about $3500 for room & board is around $14,000, living on campus would be about $22,000 a year. Look at the college websites to see if they seem to be something you'd be interested in. Try the College MatchMaker: http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/index.jsp Do you mean you want to be an attorney? If so, you don't really study law as an undergrad, but you will want to study lots of history and literature, and know it well enough to refer to it in your legal writing. Law is all about reading and writing, even for litigators. Getting into a good law school is extremely competitive, and to have a chance you need to attend the best college possible for undergrad. If you end up at a low tier law school, you really don't have much of a chance of getting a good associate position that will pay enough so you can pay off law school loan. It's really not worth it to attend a low tier law school for most students unless your parents are wealthy and will pay for law school and you don't care about working for a prestigious law firm. Law school costs generally cost about $20,000 more a year than good undergrad colleges. Good luck!

I believe there's a college just for you in Anaheim. It's called Fantasyland College. Seriously, don't they have counselors at your high school? Isn't that what they are paid to do? Actually, your first item eliminated all colleges in California: Overcrowded. Could it be that your idea of college just doesn't have any basis in reality? Coooooould bee. Your idea of what college life is, and SoCal in general, is not even close to reality: "Upper class apartment but not outrageously expensive"... and near the beach no less. Listen, anything in SoCal is already expensive. Anything near UCLA or the beach is about double the average price here, which is about $1200 per month for a 1BR apartment. So that would make the nicer areas around $2500. You still seem to have that HS attitude. Thinking that college is an extension of HS, and that it should not be a "dud". OMG, do you have a lot to learn. Seriously, if you think you've got the grades, apply to UC Santa Barbara. That's a fun party school, on the ocean, with views. But check the dropout rate before applying. (Cal Tech: DUD! But you can't get in without STELLAR grades, anyways)

I hope you guys are rich, because out-of-state tuition is A LOT of money. Somewhere where it isn't overcrowded, near the beach, and a nightlife, with upper class apartments for a cheap price is non-existant. If you though obtaining luxuries like that in UNLV was expensive, you haven't seen nothing until you visit California colleges. Recommendations: Live in the dorms, live in-state, and worry about school more than nightlife.
