Which part of California is the best place to live?

  • Once I'm out of college and grad school, I'm thinking about going back to California. I lived in coastal Santa Barbara County until 1999 and I want to go back. If I were to go back to any part of the state, where would be a good place? I am thinking about the coastal part or near the beautiful mountains, or even the Redwoods. However, I am excluding LA and San Francisco area since not only that the city is more expensive to live in, but also that it's too crowded.

    Southern california has great weather and different cities have different vibes. Oceanside has camp penelton lots of marines, carlsbad richer yeppie-ies, encinitas hippie-ish, del mar really rich, pacific beach college party town lots of good bars..... nor cal monteray is kind of nice. Eurka and humble have that oregon feeling small town type vibe, not city rush rat race. If you e mail me back with specifics i could break down a lot more have lived in a lot of places..... The California you left in 1999 is dead. During your absence the state has become an economic basket case for a multitude of reasons, many of which are due to governmental mismanagement which can be laid at the feet of both major parties. Do you really want to come back to this mess? Like so many others, if I could afford to leave I'd be gone on a heartbeat. Addendum: Since I wasn't telling you what you WANTED to hear I never expected to get "Best Answer". I know how that game is played!

I like South Central Los Angeles the BEST! And I have to agree with Peedlepup. It's not like how it was in 1999 anymore. And there we go. You want to live in the coastal part or near the beautiful mountains, or even the redwoods. You just answered your own question.
